Russell Hawkless
Russell was born in 1891 and known as Tuss
throughout his life. He married Minnie Marguerite Thomson in 1920. They
had one daughter, Joyce Winifred Hawkless in 1922 and who recently celebrated
her 81st birthday and lives on the Central Coast of NSW.
Tuss was a boat builder and shipwright by
trade and owned a boat building business at Greenwich on Sydney Harbour, NSW. He
started the Greenwich 12-foot Squadron (flying) Sailing Club and he and Shewdy
owned the flag ship. The first race was on Valentine's Day 1924.
Tuss wanted to join the AIF in World War I
but was rejected due to an eye cataract. He also went through the
depression and later worked as Manager at Wattie Fords Boat Building Business at
Berrys Bay. He retired at 72!
He gained a Volunteer Fire Brigade
certificate during World War II and a Boiler Maker's certificate. He
was a skilled craftsman, particularly with timber, an excellent painter and
part-time inventor. He enjoyed playing the violin and mandolin.
Tuss died in 1974 and was followed just a few weeks later by his
wife Minnie.
