Thomas John 3 Hawkless (Thomas Hawkless 2, John Hawkley 1) was born about 1851 in Warrnambool, Victoria and died July 24, 1911 at Waterfall, NSW. He married Mary Annie Mallitt in 1880 in Ryde, NSW. She was born in 1845, died in 1925.

The photograph below was provided by Fred Hawkless whose father Sidney George Hawkless was, like his first cousin Ernest, with the 56th Battalion. The postcard is of the "SS Suevic" - used on just one trooping trip to the Dardanelles in 1915.  http://www.greatships.net/suevic.html   

The signature of Ernest Hawkless is shown near the centre of this postcard. Other information on names on this card have been taken from the World War I Roll on the Australian War Memorial website www.awm.gov.au These are Pte Norman Leslie Anderson No. 3002, 56th Battalion, KIA 20-Oct-17; Pte Hubert Henry Saunders Rogers, No. 3244a, DOW, 25-Jul-16, Pte George Langton No. 3162 13th TAB, returned to Australia, Pte Alexander Edmund Aitken, No. 3004, 39th Battalion, returned to Australia and Gnr John Fulton, No. 3085,5th DAH'Crs, returned to Australia.

The "SS Suevic" was used as a troop ship just once to the Dardanelles in 1915. Ernest Hawkless' signature appears on the centre of this card. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal during WWI
